I love holiday things, I love ice cream, I love America & I love love love going over the top with like, everything. So, patriotic freak floats are probably my true calling in my life.
I’ve been secretly obsessing over the infamous freak-shakes & watching too many videos of people making them. The Fourth presented the perfect opportunity for me to finally make my own! I wanted to do things my way, so I did a float instead of a shake. Funny thing is, I don’t even like floats. I would prefer a shake. But, the float just seemed more American to me. I even used Coca-Cola for Americaness all-around.
If you’re attempting to create one of these gaudy drinks, you must start with a tall, clear glass. Pick the one with the widest mouth. You’ll want to stuff in everything you possibly can. Start by melting about 1/4 c. of chocolate- any kind, any color. It doesn’t even have to be chocolate actually. You could use peanut butter, Nutella, or any cookie butter. Anything sticky to get the job done. Use a bowl wide enough to dip the rim of the cup into it.
Next fill a bowl with M&M’s or sprinkles or mini chocolate chips or broken cookie pieces, etc. The sky’s the limit folks. Again, make sure sure you use a big bowl the rim of the glass will fit in.
Once the chocolate has melted (30 sec. intervals in the micro, stir in between), dip the glass in & use a spoon to coat as far down the sides as you’d like. Feel free to swipe off extra chocolate inside the glass for extra pizzazz. immediately roll the rim of the glass in the bowl of M&M’s & use your fingers to stick on any extras.
Ta-da! Looking back, I should’ve/could’ve gone much further down the sides of the glass.
I popped a bag of popcorn & threw some in the bowl I used to melt the white chocolate. Then I stirred it all up with some more M&M’s as a means to not waste that glorious melted chocolate. We’ll add some of this messy, chocolate covered popcorn to the top of the float too. Try hard not to eat it all & set it aside for later.
Now comes the actual float-making. Pick your fave vanilla ice cream, a can of coke & fill ‘er up!
Fill to the brim.
Now add a fluffy base of whipped cream, from a can or homemade or whatever your heart desires.
Get together a pile of patriotic goodness (or whatever theme you’re going with) & start stacking.
I put my straws & drink stirrers in place first. Then started at the back of the float, biggest to smallest. Patriotic Pop Tart pieces framed the backside along with Twizzlers. I stuck a powdered donut over one the straws & piled on the chocolate-covered popcorn. Lastly, I stuck a flag toothpick through some patriotic wrapped Reese’s cups.
This is the point where you’ll use what you have. Anything goes on top of a freak-float y’all! You could stack those red, white & blue marshmallows on toothpicks or skewers too for a cute addition.
Impress your friends & family this holiday weekend by adding freak-floats to the menu! They are so much fun for kids & adults. You could always add a little something special for a more grown-up version too! or get super fancy & throw some sparklers on top! Light them right before serving for a sweet surprise.
Have a Safe & Happy Fourth Y’all!
