So I have this sudden, growing love for topiaries. Previous to this I have owned a total of 0. The only experience I’ve had with them so far is these dum-dum ones we made for my niece’s first birthday party- it was a circus theme & was pretty darn cute if you want to check it out, here.
I can’t wait till it’s springtime again & I can get my hands on some pretty green ones! Till then, some cheesy Valentine’s Day ones will have to suffice.
If you want to make one too you’ll need- light pink or white spray paint, a styrofoam ball, a wooden dowel, a skinny vase, hot glue gun + hot glue, small & large conversation hearts.
First, you can spray paint your styrofoam ball a pastel pink to help blend in the gaps. If it’s white & not green, you can probably leave it. Whatever you choose! To make the painting process much easier go ahead & stick the ball with the wooden dowel & stick the bottom of it in a foam square or anything else you happen to have on hand.
After thats dry start gluing on the conversation hearts. Start around the hole you’ve already made & fan them out around it.
Continue going around until it’s completely covered & you get to the top.
Obviously, there will be some gaps, which is why we painted it. I considered adding small conversation on top to help cover the gaps, but it takes quite a while to glue the large ones on in the first place. Be aware that this is time-consuming, but I find it to be relaxing to work on these sorts of crafts & the end result is fabulous.
Once you’re finished fill up a skinny vase with a handful or two of conversation hearts. Then stick the dowel in the middle & add a few more handfuls of hearts around the stick, trying to balance it in the middle. Keep adding until it stands up fine by itself.
Finish it off with a big, pretty bow.
I made a set of two to flank my huge dining room table. I love these so much more than I’d even imagined I would.
Plus, everytime I walk by I get a huge whiff of super sugaryness & am instantly reminded of all my childhood Valentine’s Days & those icky boys who gave me flowers. Can’t beat that!
